Tangaroa Ara Rau

What We Do

At Tangaroa Ara Rau, we believe every rangatahi deserves the opportunity to build a future they want to be part of.

We work alongside young people aged 11–18 who are facing challenges that place their wellbeing, relationships, education, or future at risk. Through trusted relationships, early intervention, and practical support, we help rangatahi identify the future they want for themselves and build the confidence, skills, and support networks to achieve it.

Every rangatahi is partnered with a dedicated youth worker who takes the time to listen, understand their unique circumstances, and develop a plan based on their strengths, aspirations, and goals. Together, we connect young people with the right people, services, and opportunities to overcome barriers and create lasting positive change.

How We Help

Our youth workers walk alongside rangatahi to:

  • Build trusted, positive relationships.

  • Identify strengths, aspirations, and personal goals.

  • Develop practical strategies to overcome challenges.

  • Connect with education, employment, health, and community services.

  • Strengthen relationships with whānau and other trusted supports.

  • Build the confidence, resilience, and life skills needed for a positive future.

Our Approach

Our approach is youth-centred, strengths-based, and grounded in the belief that lasting change happens through trust, connection, and genuine partnership.

We meet rangatahi where they are—both literally and figuratively—and work alongside them to create meaningful, sustainable change. By intervening early and focusing on each young person's strengths and aspirations, we help build brighter futures for rangatahi, stronger whānau, and healthier communities.

Every young person deserves someone who believes in them. At Tangaroa Ara Rau, we are committed to being that trusted partner as rangatahi navigate their own pathway towards the future they want to achieve.

Will Tangaroa Ara Rau Produce Results?

StreetWork’s focus is first and last on the vulnerable young people we support. We know our program produces results. Read Huber Social’s - Social Impact report measuring the shift in the wellbeing of vulnerable young people in the StreetWork (Australia) program by clicking the button below.

Working with Vulnerable Rangitahi

Our medium to high-risk young people face a range of challenges and behaviours that, through no fault of their own, place their lives at risk. These videos share their StreetWork (Australia) experiences and life stories.

“I was so confused, dark and unhappy when I first started the StreetWork program. My mentor never gave up on me; he was always ready to take my phone calls. Reducing the drug use hasn’t been easy, but I’m managing better now. I have people to help me and I have hope”.
